There are four C’s in use when grading gemstones. Colour, Clarity, Cut, Carat (weight) …and this will tell you everything you need to know about moissanite.
But! there is a fifth C – which is just as important as the other four C’s – Confidence.
The quality and enduring value of moissanite can be expressed in those 5C’s and every moissanite sold by Moissanite SA™ is strictly examined prior to being selected for sale.
Some of the leading global suppliers of moissanite still describe the colour (and clarity) of moissanite in diamond grading terms, for example Charles & Colvard.
The internationally accepted standard when grading diamonds for colour is using the letters of the alphabet, from D to Z, D being the whitest and Z by comparison, the most tinted/yellow. Whilst it is clear that moissanite is simply not a diamond and moissanite should not be graded using the same terms as a diamond, the following explanation will provide clarity.
The correct terms to be used when describing moissanite should be colourless, near colourless, slightly tinted and tinted. Other colours like pink, blue, yellow and other colours are also available.
For the sake of simplicity, but not strictly speaking correct, and for purposes of approximate comparison, letters are sometimes assigned to moissanite.
Majestic Moissanite™ is sold in the colourless and near colourless range being DEF and GH respectively as described in the paragraphs above. Charles & Colvard® is sold in the colourless and near colourless range being DEF and GHI respectively as described in the paragraphs above.
Moissanite in tinted colours (more yellow) is available, but after decades of being in the forefront of the moissanite market, we have seen demand mostly in the Colourless and Near Colourless ranges.
We are meticulously strict with the colour grading of the stones we offer for sale to ensure that all the moissanite we supply falls well within the Colourless to Near Colourless ranges as described.
All Majestic Moissanite™ and Charles & Colvard Created Moissanite® gems are precisely calibrated and hand-faceted by master gem cutters to maximize brilliance and spark its ultimate fire that increases the refractive index of moissanite. It is vital that the correct cutting of the angles is achieved to maximize the fire and brilliance of moissanite. These angles are quite different to how diamonds are cut.
As previously mentioned, moissanite is not a diamond and moissanite should not be graded using the same terms as a diamond, the following explanation will provide clarity.
Internationally accepted standards when grading diamonds for clarity is as follows:
- (FL) Flawless. No inclusions and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
- (IF) Internally Flawless. No inclusions visible under 10x magnification.
- (VVS1 and VVS2) Very, Very Slightly Included Inclusions, so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification.
- (VS1 and VS2) Very Slightly Included Inclusions are observed with effort under 10x magnification, but can be characterized as minor.
- (SI1 and SI2) Slightly Included Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification.
- (I1, I2, and I3) Included Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification.
The generally accepted grading of a gemstone with few or no inclusions is termed ‘Eye Clean’. This means that when viewed with the ‘naked’ eye, no inclusions are visible. Other terminology used is very lightly included, lightly included, moderately included and heavily included.
Moissanite is created using organic elements, mimicking nature in a controlled environment. So, some moissanite gems have tiny, needle-like inclusions that can develop during the growing process of moissanite.
Inclusions in moissanite are not like inclusions within some other gemstones including diamonds. Instead of dark/carbon spots that block light, moissanite inclusions (when visible) are mostly caused by micropipes (the lack of material).
Majestic Moissanite™ is exclusively sold in eye clean grades. This means that imperfections, if any, cannot be seen with the naked eye. Typically, even using the industry standard 10x magnification, inclusions (if any) will be extremely difficult to see.
Only moissanite that passes our stringent quality standards are made available for sale.
Charles & Colvard®
Charles & Colvard® moissanite is sold in the following grades as described on their website:
- Forever One IF-VS
- Moissanite By Charles & Colvard® (MOI CC) SI-I2
Moissanite is visually proportionate to typical diamond carat weights, but is approximately 10% to 15% lighter.
It is easier to sell moissanite by millimetre size rather than weight since moissanite is sold in increments of either 1.0mm or 0.5mm and their corresponding weights matching the millimetre sizes. For example, a 6.5mm round brilliant natural diamond would have a weight of approximately 1.0 carat compared to a moissanite of the same dimension (6.5mm) which has a weight of approximately 0.88 carats.
Simply put, to the eye they appear to be the same size, although the weight of the two stones may be slightly different.
