About the asscher cut
Where it comes from
The asscher is named after Joseph Asscher of Amsterdam, who patented his square step cut in December 1902. The patent lapsed during the Second World War, and since then the name has been used for the square, deep-cut step style in general. The Asscher family still makes its own updated version, the Royal Asscher cut, introduced in 2001. Our stones are asscher-style cuts, not that trademarked cut.
What it suits
Art Deco rings and anyone who likes geometry. Its cut corners give it an octagonal outline, and it looks its best in a solitaire with four claws, or with tapered side stones. It's compact and sturdy, so it wears well every day.
In moissanite
Look down into an asscher and you'll see squares within squares, sometimes called a windmill or hall of mirrors. Like the emerald cut, it shows flash rather than fire, and it shows colour and clarity openly, so DEF colour and VVS clarity matter here. Moissanite is doubly refractive, so you may see facet edges doubled when you look in at an angle; straight down it's least visible.

Questions
- Asscher or emerald cut?
- Both are step cuts. The asscher is square and deeper; the emerald cut is rectangular and longer.
- Asscher or princess?
- A princess is a brilliant, full of sparkle, with sharp corners. An asscher is a step cut, with cut corners and long mirror-like flashes.
- Why does an asscher look smaller for its weight?
- It's cut deep, so more of its weight sits below the top.
Every asscher on this page is SOLA™, Moissanite SA's own range. We buy direct from the maker, and every stone is DEF colourless with VVS clarity and comes with a GRA certificate. Each one is inspected before it's sent to you.
