About the round cut
Where it comes from
The round brilliant is the most closely studied cut there is. In the 1860s the Boston cutter Henry Morse worked out its modern angles, and around 1870 his workshop produced the old European cut. In 1919 Marcel Tolkowsky published Diamond Design, which calculated the proportions that send the most light back to the eye. Most round brilliants are still cut close to his figures. He's often called its inventor, but the shape came first; he refined it.
What it suits
Every setting and every hand. It works as a solitaire on four or six claws, in a halo, as the centre of a three-stone ring, or in a bezel for hands that work hard. With no points or corners to catch, it's the safest choice when the ring is a surprise.
In moissanite
Moissanite throws more colour than almost any gemstone (its dispersion is 0.104), and the round brilliant is the cut built to show it. In sunlight you'll see bright rainbow flashes; indoors, white sparkle. Because every SOLA stone is DEF colourless, those flashes stay crisp, with no warm tint underneath.
Sizes
21 sizes, from 5mm (0.50ct) to 20mm (18.00ct), R 1 600 to R 29 600. We keep 5mm to 8mm on the shelf; other sizes are ordered in, in about 2 weeks. To picture one: 6.5mm is 1.00ct and costs R 2 400.
Questions
- What size round is one carat?
- Our 6.5mm round is 1.00ct. A 7.5mm is 1.50ct, and an 8mm is 2.00ct.
- Four claws or six?
- Four claws show more of the stone and give it a slightly squarer look. Six hold it more securely and keep the outline round.
- Does a round moissanite sparkle differently from other cuts?
- Yes. It shows the most fire of any shape, because the round brilliant's facets are arranged to split light into colour.
Every round on this page is SOLA™, Moissanite SA's own range. We buy direct from the maker, and every stone is DEF colourless with VVS clarity and comes with a GRA certificate. Each one is inspected before it's sent to you.
