About the heart cut
Where it comes from
Heart-shaped stones are mentioned as early as the 15th century; a 1463 letter from Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the Duke of Milan, refers to one. Royal stories have attached themselves to the shape since, including a heart ring said to have passed from Mary, Queen of Scots to Elizabeth I. That story is often told but can't be confirmed. Today's heart is a modern brilliant cut, with a cleft at the top and a point at the base.
What it suits
A heart says what it means, so it's chosen for anniversary rings, promise rings and pendants as much as for engagements. It needs some size for the shape to read clearly on the finger. It's usually held by three claws: one at the point and two at the lobes.
In moissanite
A heart is a brilliant cut, so it carries plenty of fire. Its symmetry is what makes it: the two lobes should match and the cleft should be crisp. Its point is the exposed spot, so a V-shaped claw is worth having. At the tip and lobes, a DEF colourless stone keeps the whole outline white.

Questions
- What size heart should I choose?
- At about 6.5mm and up the shape reads clearly on a finger. Smaller hearts work well in pendants and earrings.
- Which way up does a heart sit?
- Point towards the fingertip, as a rule. For a pendant, the point hangs down.
- How is a heart set?
- Usually with three claws: one on each lobe and a V-shaped claw on the point.
