About the pear cut
Where it comes from
Pear-shaped stones go back to the 1400s, and the faceted pear we know, a brilliant cut, arrived in the 1700s. It's often said to be the invention of Lodewyk van Berquem, a cutter in Bruges. That story is old but not well documented, and even the Diamond Museum in Bruges treats parts of his legend as myth.
What it suits
A pear is part round, part marquise, and it's worn point towards the fingertip, which lengthens the hand. It suits a solitaire, a halo that follows its outline, or a pendant, where the teardrop hangs naturally. Its point needs a V-shaped claw to protect it.
In moissanite
Like an oval, a pear can show a bow-tie, a soft darker band across its width, which moves as the stone does. Its narrow tip is where colour gathers most in a long stone, so a DEF colourless pear stays bright right to the point.
Sizes
8 sizes, from 7×5mm (0.78ct) to 16×12mm (7.65ct), R 2 050 to R 13 050. Every size is ordered in, in about 2 weeks. To picture one: 8×5mm is 0.92ct and costs R 2 250.
Questions
- Which way should a pear point?
- Towards the fingertip is traditional and lengthens the finger. Pointing towards the wrist is less common, but some prefer it.
- How do you protect the point?
- A V-shaped claw or a bezel tip over the point.
- Is a pear good for a pendant?
- Very. It's one of the most popular pendant shapes, because it hangs as a natural drop.
Every pear on this page is SOLA™, Moissanite SA's own range. We buy direct from the maker, and every stone is DEF colourless with VVS clarity and comes with a GRA certificate. Each one is inspected before it's sent to you.
