About the marquise cut
Where it comes from
The marquise is a long boat shape with a point at each end. Its other name, navette, is French for "little boat". By tradition it's named after the Marquise de Pompadour, who took that title in 1745. The popular story that Louis XV had a stone cut to match her lips is a legend; no record of it has been found.
What it suits
A dramatic solitaire. The marquise has the longest outline of any cut for its weight, so it makes the most of a stone's size and lengthens the finger. It also looks striking set east-west, or as side stones. Both points need protecting, usually with V-shaped claws.
In moissanite
A marquise can show a bow-tie across its middle, softer in a well-cut stone, and it moves as the light does. Its two fine points are where colour shows most in a long stone. That's why a DEF colourless marquise matters: it stays white from tip to tip.
Sizes
7 sizes, from 8×4mm (0.55ct) to 14×7mm (2.87ct), R 1 700 to R 5 400. Every size is ordered in, in about 2 weeks. To picture one: 10×5mm is 1.11ct and costs R 2 600.
Questions
- Does a marquise look bigger than other cuts?
- For its weight, yes. Its length gives it the largest outline, so a 10×5mm marquise looks bigger on the finger than a 6.5mm round of about the same weight.
- Are marquise points fragile?
- They're the most exposed part. V-shaped claws over both tips protect them.
- Marquise or pear?
- A marquise points both ways and looks symmetrical. A pear is round at one end, softer, and points one way.
