About the oval cut
Where it comes from
Oval stones are old. One of the most famous, the Koh-i-Noor, was recut into an oval brilliant in London in 1852. The modern oval brilliant, faceted for sparkle rather than to save weight, arrived in the 1960s, and cutter Lazare Kaplan is widely credited with it.
What it suits
An oval set lengthways makes a finger look longer and slimmer, which is why it's so often chosen for slender or shorter fingers. It sits well in a solitaire, a halo or between two smaller stones. Set east-west, across the finger, it looks modern and low-key.
In moissanite
Long brilliant cuts can show a darker band across the middle, called a bow-tie. A well-cut oval keeps it faint, and it moves as the stone does. At larger sizes an oval also shows colour more than a round, especially towards its ends. That's one reason we only sell DEF colourless: the stone stays white from end to end.
Sizes
10 sizes, from 6×4mm (0.54ct) to 18×13mm (10.06ct), R 1 650 to R 16 900. We keep 7×5mm to 9×7mm on the shelf; other sizes are ordered in, in about 2 weeks. To picture one: 7×5mm is 0.91ct and costs R 2 250.
Questions
- Does an oval look bigger than a round?
- It looks longer. An 8×6mm oval and a 7.5mm round weigh about the same, but the oval runs further along the finger.
- What is the bow-tie in an oval?
- A darker band across the middle, caused by how light leaves a long stone. Every oval has some; in a good cut it's soft and shifts as you move.
- North-south or east-west?
- North-south (along the finger) is the classic look and lengthens the hand. East-west sits lower and suits stacking.
Every oval on this page is SOLA™, Moissanite SA's own range. We buy direct from the maker, and every stone is DEF colourless with VVS clarity and comes with a GRA certificate. Each one is inspected before it's sent to you.
