About the emerald cut

Where it comes from

The emerald cut takes its name from the gem it was made for. Emerald crystals suit long, rectangular step cuts, and emeralds were commonly cut this way by the second half of the 1600s. The style was taken up for other stones, and it became a signature of the Art Deco years in the 1920s and 1930s.

What it suits

Understated, tailored rings. An emerald cut looks at home in a simple solitaire, between two tapered baguettes, or set east-west on a fine band. Its long lines lengthen the finger, and its cut corners are less exposed than square ones.

In moissanite

A step cut doesn't scatter light into sparkle the way a brilliant does. It shows long, mirror-like flashes, sometimes called a hall of mirrors. The open facets show the stone's colour and clarity more clearly than any other cut, so a step cut is where DEF colour and VVS clarity matter most. Moissanite is also doubly refractive, so looking in at an angle you may see facet edges doubled. It's a trait of the material, and it's least visible looking straight down.

Sizes

Questions

Why does an emerald cut sparkle less?
It's built for flash, not fire. Broad, flat facets give slow, bright reflections instead of rainbow glitter.
Does an emerald cut show flaws?
It shows more than a brilliant, which is why we only sell VVS clarity.
Emerald or radiant?
Same outline. The radiant has brilliant facets underneath, so it sparkles more; the emerald cut is calmer and more architectural.
