About the princess cut

Where it comes from

The princess is a young cut. In 1961 the London cutter Arpad Nagy created the "profile cut", the first to be called a princess. The square brilliant sold under that name today was developed in the late 1970s and early 1980s; GIA credits Betzalel Ambar and Israel Itskowitz with it.

What it suits

Clean lines and a modern look. It's the natural match for a straight, architectural band, and it sits neatly beside channel-set side stones. Its four sharp corners should be held by V-shaped claws, which also frame the square.

In moissanite

The princess is a brilliant cut, so it keeps much of moissanite's fire in a square outline, with a crisp cross pattern from its facets. Its corners are its weak spot. Moissanite is very hard (9.25 on the Mohs scale), but a hard knock on an unprotected point can still chip it, so we recommend protected corners for everyday rings.

Questions

Why does a princess look smaller than a round of the same weight?
More of its weight sits in its depth. A 5.5mm princess and a 6.5mm round both weigh about one carat.
What setting protects a princess?
Four V-shaped claws over the corners, or a bezel.
Is a princess the same as a square cut?
Yes. The princess is a square brilliant; an asscher is a square step cut.
